Siva

What is the difference between the soul and the mind?

The soul is the consciousness or the knowing principle in man.
The mind belongs to the category of matter.
Siva is the soul and Parvati is the mind.
The consciousness is the Reality, the unchanging,
unmoving, all pervading soul.
Mind being matter is changeable and unreal.

We perceive objects through the organs of sense perception. The soul enables the organs to perceive the objects. The soul exists in all living beings as consciousness. It is the light of the soul that makes the sense-organs and the mind appear alive and luminous.

Siva is the unchanging consciousness – Nirguna or without form or shape. This unchanging consciousness-Siva – becomes saguna or with form, when Maya Shakti, which is Siva’s illusive power appears as mind and matter. This phenomenon is known as Ardhanarishwar. Thirunavukkarasar:

After worshiping thirumaRaikkAdu appar perumAn wanted to worship the Lord of thiruvIzimizalai again. He went there saluting the shrine in n^AgappattiNam . From thiruvIzimizalai he went to thiruvAvadu thuRai sang the grace of God and proceeded to pazaiyARai . There the Jains obscured the very old abode of the Lord and claimed the place to be theirs. The humble but cannot be humbled, the courteous but not coward, fighting for the justice but not adopting violence as the default way, the soft but determined sage sat in fast next to the shrine saying he would not leave till he gets to worship the Omnipresent Almighty taken abode there. The caring Lord appeared in the dream of the king and instructed him the location where the Jains have hid the abode. Awakened in surprise the king rushed with his courtmen to the site following the marks told by the Lord and removed all the barricades raised by the Jains saluting the sage. The king made a nice altar with tower. Then the victorious valiant sage worshiped the God who can not be obscured the transience.

He traveled on the banks of the river kAvEri worshiping the Lord in the abodes on both the banks. He saluted thiruvAnaikkA, thiruveRumbiyUr, thiruchchirAppaLLi, kaRkudi, thirupparAyththuRai and other abodes doing his great service with the hand plow and proceeded towards thiruppainynyIli . The journey was tiring making him thirsty, hungry and fatiguous - the three major recurring physical deficiencies to quench which the human strives hard. The sage holding the feet of the Absolute with non falling spirit went ahead on his way of determination to thiruppainynyIli. Can the Mercy on the mountains which responded even to the cry of the piglets, bear the trouble Its truthful slave was undergoing ? It appeared in the form of an ash smeared chanter of vEdas on his way with food waiting for the devotee to arrive. He told him to have the food He has, drink the chill water from the pond nearby and come out of fatigue. appar ate the food the Lord who gave the nectar to the dEvas gave and felt quite pleasant. The Lord in some other form asked him where he was going to. To the saint who said he was going to thiruppainynIli He - the company of whom the great sages desire to cross the ocean of disturbances said He too is going there and accompanied him. As they reached thiruppainynIli the Lord disappeared. The sage stricken with wonder and admiration fell on the feet of the Lord of thiruppainynyIli to praise the immense grace He showed for him.

He traveled towards north to reach thiruvaNNAmalai to rejoice in the worship of the Lord making even the life better than liberation itself ! He proceeded to the pallava kingdom then. He first prostrated to the Lord of thiruvOththUr . As he was coming towards the city kAnychi , the entire city ornated itself to receive the sage who traversed the ulterior disturbances victoriously with the grace of the yOganatha . Saluting the ocean of saluting devotees he went to worship the Lord who dissolved in the devotion of the mother of the Universe at thirukkachchi Ekampam and poured the holy water of his tears of love. Worshiping often at the place where an immense love was shown to the world Ekampam he worshiped the Lord in thiruk kachchi mayAnam, thiruk kachchi mERRaLi, thirumARpERu and many other abodes in kanychi a city famous for its innumerous shrines. He continued to north to serve in the abodes thirukkazukunRam, thiruvAnmiyUr, mayilAppUr to salute and stay at thiruvoRRIyUr for some time. He further worshiped the shrines thiruppAchUr, thiru AlaN^kAdu, thiruk kArikarai . He went ahead to salute the golden haired Lord's abode thirukkALaththi where He showed the greatness of simple love of the hunter devotee kaNNappa n^AyanAr (1).

Yearning to see the beautiful and holy most abode of the Lord kailAsham he continued his journey towards north. He worshiped the thirupparuppadham (shri shailam) , traveled then in karnataka, maharashtra, madhya pradhesh and arrived finally in vAraNAsi . He saluted the Lord having ga.nga in His matted hair taken abode on the banks of ga.nga in vAraNAsi with whole hearted devotion. Leaving back the other pilgrims there he continued his pilgrimage to mount kailAsh. He proceeded to the Himalayan forests where even dEvas would be afraid to go alone. In those days when there was no proper means of transport for traveling such a long distance - thousands of kilometers - can be considered to be an achievement. He traveled in the rough and tough surfaces of the mountains without anybody's help without any vehicle to carry him. All he had was only two things. One was devotion and the other was determination. Those two for him were not in small amounts but were as giant as the mountain he was climbing. Walking day and night his lotus like feet were worn out, but his eagerness to worship the Lord with His consort on the mount was not. With his hands he leapt forward to continue his journey. With the wrists broken after some time he with an undiminishing love he crept forward with his body. The bones in chest broken, with the flesh coming out, he was not able to do that even. Even at that situation his determination was not reduced even by the size of a bead. He rolled ahead in his journey towards Him. The entire body was torn and was not able to roll even. Still he tried to push his body forward and move. Immense is his determination ! If one says it as strong as a rock it may exaggerate the strength of the rock.

Blessing the world to have some more of the honey like hymns of appar the Lord came in the form of a sage and asked appar why he was toiling like that. When appar told that he wanted to worship the Lord on kailAsh He told it is not so easy a task and asked him to return back. But appar perumAn was firm that he would not return without seeing the Lord at kailAsham. The Strength of the devotees looking at the strong dedication of the devotee disappeared in the horizon and raised the voice, "Oh great king of words! Raise ! Have a dip in this pond and see us in the form we are at kailAsham raising from the pond in thiruvaiyARu .". With all the wounds vanished he rose with a luminant body to salute the Almighty with the grace of that Grace. With the hands folded on the head keeping the order of the Lord on his head he entered the pond. To the surprise of the entire world, by the grace that can not be measured by anybody he appeared in one of the ponds in thiruvaiyARu . He saw everything in thiruvaiyARu reflecting the principle of shiva and shakthi. He came praising them in front of the shrine of the Lord in thiruvaiyARu. The temple appeared as the mount kailAsh with the praise of vishNu, brahma, indra and other dEvas, and the sets of different people like devAs, daemons, sages, ga.ndharvas present, the dancing women of Heaven like ramba, Urvasi performing, all the rivers including ga.nga worshiping, the great servant n^aN^dhi dEvar guarding the abode, saw on the mount of silver with the creeper of emerald, the shining beautiful ruby hill like on the Holy Bull with the Goddess of the mountain the Generous Great God. Saluted Him, sang unable to find words, danced in ecstasy, with the hair standing throughout the body he cried. Who can tell the state of that highly dedicated sage when he saw the Lord! He got the reward for his determination. He was in that bliss for quite a long time. Then the Lord changed the scene to make everything look normal in their usual way. Consoling himself that it was God's grace appar sang the scene unseen by others in beautiful hymn "mAdhar piRaik kaNNIyAnai" . He explains admirably the unparalleled kailAsha scene he saw. He stayed in thiruvaiyARu serving, saluting and singing the Lord different kinds of songs thiruththANdakam, thirukkuRun^thokai, thirun^Erichai, thiruviruththam .
Sundaramoorthi Nayanar:

The chera emperor perumAkkOdhaiyAr who had enthroned in his heart the Lord who dances in the forests smearing the ash, had come to know about the devotional singing of vanRoNdar through the Lord Himself. In the zeal of meeting a splendid devotee he reached thiruvArUr. Meanwhile chundharar had got lots of material praising the Lord at n^Agaik kArONam, saluted many other abodes and was back in ArUr. chEramAn who was most humble towards the devotees of the Red-matted-haired Lord saluted and chun^dharar saluted him in deference. The two hugged each other with their unified inclination towards the Lord of justice flag bringing them close to each other. This true friendship made ArUrar to be called chEramAn thOzar (The friend of chErar). chun^dharar took him to the abode of the Lord who danced in their tongue, chEramAn sang thirumummaNik kOvai in praise of the Lord. The king devotee was immersed in the hospitality of the chun^dharar couple which was superior than the hospitality shown to a king, it was a hospitality shown to a devotee of the Lord. Accepting the service of chEramAn thOzar the chEra king saluted him and they both thanked the Lord granting them the spiritual companionship. They stayed in thiruvArUr for many days worshiping the Lord vIdhi vidaN^gar .

chun^dharar wanted to worship the Lord at thirumadhurai and other abodes in the pANdiya kingdom. chEramAn also zealous to salute the Lord of madhurai and unwilling to leave chun^dharar joined him in the pilgrimage. With many people accompanying they sang the Lord who looks Marvelous in the ornaments of nature at n^Agaik kArONam, thirumaRaikkAdu, agaththiyAn paLLi and at kOdik kOyil where there were no inhabitants around. In the pANdiya kingdom worshiping the Lord at thirup puththUr they arrived at madhurai. Along with the other two emperors of the thamiz land paNdiya, chOza the chEra emperor and chun^dharar sang in the spring of devotion the Supreme Source that sits in the abode of madhurai. Saluting the various abodes in the temple town madhurai chun^dharar worshiped along with the three emperors at thirup pUvaNam, thiruvAppanUr, thiruvEdakam, thirup paraN^kunRu and stayed in madhurai in the thoughts of the Enchanting Beauty. There was peace in the land and His Name spread.

When the other two kings took leave chEra emperor and n^AyanAr continued their holy journey in the pANdiya kingdom. They bowed down to the Lord of Charming Eyes at kuRRAlam, thirun^elvEli, thiruvirAmEchcharam and many abodes. From RamEswaram they saluted the Lord of thiruk kEdhIchcharam in the island of Sri Lanka. When they stayed saluting the dEvadEva at thiruchchuziyal He came in n^AyanAr's dreams in the form of a Bull that was marvelous and never seen and told him that His place is kAnappEr . Impressed chun^dharar rushed saluting the Lord of thiruchchuziyal to thirukkAnappEr and bathed the Lovely Lord in the sacred materials of his devotion and sweet hymns. They adored the Lord at thirup punavAyil and reached back in the chOza kingdom.

Worshiping the umA mahEshwara at the abode of pAmpaNi n^agar - pAdhALIchcharam they arrived at thiruvArUr. They saluted the Lord of thiruvArUr and entered n^ambi's home. chErar stayed in the pleasant service of the n^AyanAr. He prayed to n^ambiyArUrar to visit the chEra kingdom. When he agreed with the consent of paravaiyAr they, keep the Holy Feet of the Lord of thiruvArUr in their minds left to keraLa. Subduing to the Lord of thiruk kaNdiyUr they neared thiruvaiyARu. chEramAn was intensely enthused to worship the Lord of thiruvaiyARu. The river kAviri was flooding in the middle ! chun^dharar put his splendid devotion in a song paravum parichonRu calling the Lord aiyARudaiya adikaLO !!. By the Lord's order there appeared a dry channel in the middle of the flooding river. n^ayanmArs of wonderable love to the Lord went through that to worship their Life-stream like Lord. After they returned back the river started flowing normally. Praising the Glory of Lord shiva they continued their journey crossing the choza and koN^gu kingdoms.

In his empire chEramAn and chun^dhara mUrthi n^AyanAr were given gorgeous welcome. In the capital koduN^gOLUr they went to the abode thiruvanychaik kaLam to salute the Lord praised with the Holy Five Letters. chEramAn perumAL took ArUrar on the elephant through the town, he sitting behind and fanning him with chAmaram ! Pleased peerless hospitality of chEramAn marked by various such deeds and more with his love, thampirAn thOzar stayed in koduN^kOLUr for some time. With the ever occurring magnetic affection for the Lord of thiruvArUr filling his mind ArUrar wanted to leave for thiruvArUr. He consoled with great difficulty the chEra friend who never was willing to get separated from him. The emperor ordered the enormous materials he had to be sent with ArUrar ahead of him. The two matching friends took leave of each other and chun^dharar went on his way to ArUr through thiru murugan pUNdi. The playful Lord sent His army as hunters who robbed away all the material chEramAn sent. When vanRoNdar came to know about this, he went to the Lord of thirumurugan pUNdi and charged Him in salutation of allowing the atrocity. The Lord Who gets pleased with his songs gave back all the material the hunters took. ArUrar thanked Him and reached thiruvArUr with the gifts of the chEra king.
Thiruvaiyaru is a panchayat town in Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is situated on the banks of the river Kaveri, 13 km from Thanjavur, Thiruvaaiyaru has an old Shiva temple dedicated to Panchanatheeswar. Though pilgrims flock to this temple throughout the year, Thiruvaiyaru is more renowned for its association with Saint Thyagaraja, who, along with Muthuswami Dikshitar and Shyama Sastri, comprises the Trinity of Carnatic music. Thiruvaiyaru means Five Rivers around the city.

Near the Shiva temple is the one-roomed house where Tyagaraja composed some of his greatest works. On the banks of the river is the samadhi of the saint composer and it is here that the greatest music festival in the country takes place annually.

The Thyagaraja Aradhana festival is held in January when most of the leading exponents of Carnatic music come to perform and are watched by thousands of ardent fans of classical music. A huge complex is now under construction at this site to accommodate the large audience that come to the concert in ever increasing numbers every year.

History

The vast temple in this town, known as "Dakshina Kailasam" (Southern abode of Shiva), built in an area of approximately 60000 square meters, boasts of 5 'prakarams' (outer precincts used for religious purposes) and many 'mandapams' (great halls). Several inscriptions in the temple affiliates the temple to the Cholas, Pandyas, and other rulers. Karikala Chola, Rajaraja the great, Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan, and Krishna Devarayar are associated with Thiruvaiyaru. The temple has two distinct divisions called 'Uttarakailasam' and 'Dakshinakailasam'. Uttarakailasam was built by Rajaraja Cholan's queen in the late 10th century who also made several endowments . Dakshinakailasam was renovated by Rajendra Cholan's queen. Appar, one of the important Nayanmar, was closely associated with this shrine and dedicated one of the songs in 'Thevaram' to this temple
